Pacific Labour Scheme

The Pacific Labour Scheme provides PNG citizens with the opportunity to work in Australia for up to three years. Jobs can be low- or semi-skilled, and covers industries including tourism and hospitality, aged and disability care, agriculture, fisheries and aquaculture, mining and manufacturing industry. 

 

Workers must be employed in jobs in rural and regional Australia. This includes some capital cities, including Adelaide, Darwin and Hobart.

PNG's first workers in the Pacific Labour Scheme are working in agriculture and food processing, in locations around Australia.

All PNG workers must meet the following criteria to be selected for work overseas:

  • be between 21 and 40 years of age when they apply for work

  • be fit and healthy, and able to pass a rigorous fitness test including blood pressure tests and chest x-rays, and have evidence of polio vaccination

  • have good verbal english; good written english is required for some roles

  • be willing to work hard for up to 12 hours a day, which will be set out in their conditions of employment

    • ​we give preference to those actively working in their industry e.g. agriculture, tourism​ and hospitality, fisheries

    • many jobs require experience and some, such as aged care, require qualifications

  • pass a police check

  • be of good character and have no drinking, buai or other behavioural concerns

  • have a can-do attitude and will do what it takes to get the job done
